Can You See It

14 Jan

If a hyena had orange and red stripes similar to the zebra’s black and white pattern, it would be easy to spot in the photo.  Right…plain as the nose on your face.   They are tannish-grey with irregular dark blotches.  God’s camouflage is effective, isn’t it?  That nose gazing is happening in a cave at midnight.  One’s eye senses the movement but does not easily discern the still and quiet lingering eyes as they watch.  A hyena is rarely aggressive.  It prefers to scavenge things that are already dead or dying.  They usually skulk around in packs, afraid to confront even the vultures holding conference on a decaying carcass.  They faint and retreat hoping to scare away the thing that is competing for the higher position on the food chain.

Upper left quadrant…half in the sun and half in the shade.

Can sin be like that in our lives?  Easy to observe once it is pointed out.  Especially the hard-to-discern ones…pride, selfishness, self-will, materialism.  They are not the ones in the orange and red stripes.  Most of us who are not in the Oval Office know when we are in adultery and lust.  Kodachrome zebra.   Sin’s camouflage is effective also…like the quiet lingering eyes in the background brush.  Not necessarily aggressive and many times justified by the pack mentality.  Like the hyena, sin preys on the spiritually dead and dying.  Many times it faints and darts in efforts to raise panic and fear.  Finally, when the hope in our hearts that would prompt us toward sanctification is abandoned the hyenas come laughing.  If they could talk they might ask, “Did you forget that greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world?”  That is why we share hope with hearts.  There are many hyenas in Ethiopia.  America too?

Allen and Susan – Enjoying your blog and continuing to keep you in our prayers! I was at Phillip and Aimee’s cleaning last week, and Aira asked if she could help me 🙂 As we were dusting we came across your picture and I told her that I knew BOTH of her grandpa and grandma’s! She told me “That grandma and grandpa live in Africa and they miss me very much” I told her I’m sure they do! She is a little sweetheart 🙂 Love and Prayers, Laura
