“Doo, Doo, Doo, Lookin’ Out My Backdoor”

27 Aug

Do you remember a summer and that certain song that went with it from your days of youth.  Sure yah do!  OK.  Now, for the golden oldie question…how ’bout…CCR?  It’s not one of the properties in Monopoly.  Lets try rock and roll bands for ’60’s please.   Answer: Their  hits include: Proud Mary, Down on the Corner, Who Will Stop the Rain, Bad Moon Rising, and Fortunate Son.

It was ’70.  Lake James.  The weather was hot and so was the music.  At least, for then it was.  The whole family was there and life seemed easy and exciting.  The back door of the cottage faced the water less than 100 feet away; the family speed boat at the dock.  The scene lookin’ out that back door resonated of none of the things that American’s tried to forget for a week and then call it a vacation.  Fill up every day with as much as possible…if you were young.  And do as little as possible…if you were old.  And pray there was enough peace in the middle to call it enjoyment.  There was.  It was.

This week I got out the camera and took these pictures.  Lookin’ out my back door.  No, you can’t count the boats parked out on the sandbar.  Or lack of them in the early morning still.  But there was tranquility.  There was a peace in my heart, and for some reason for a second, I was back in that unforgettable summer when memory imagines perfection.  Doo, doo, doo….

My idea of perfection has changed.  None of the treasures from that old magic time were there before the lens.  Family.  Leisure.  Pastimes.  There were no dreams of owning a cottage on the lake in the someday.   Somewhere, behind where I stood, all the pain and poverty of Ethiopia existed.  But this…this was a garden interlude with God.  Somewhere behind me in time, there were other magic moments and other back doors and other memories.  But there in that moment, God shared hope in my heart that this was a new unforgettable idyll.  The song lyric that goes with this frame has changed as well.  “More, more about Jesus.  More, more about Jesus.  More of His saving fullness see…”
